I’m sure some of you may have already heard or read articles about this already, but recently the Environmental Agency have issued new legislation on the disposal of waste upholstered domestic seating.
Waste domestic seating includes any item of seating of a household type from households or businesses that is waste. Unfortunately this covers quite a large range of items including but not limited to the below…
- Sofas
- Sofa Beds
- Armchairs
- Kitchen and Dining room Chairs
- Stools and foot stools
- Home office chairs
- Futons
- Bean bags & floor and sofa cushions
- Head Boards
Upholstered Items of domestic seating and any items with any part made of or containing leather, synthetic leather, other fabric, or foam waste may contain POPs.
The Environment Agency has undertaken an investigation and the average concentration of these pollutants was four times the legal concentration limit, of 1000mg/kg, which has confirmed that Textiles and foam in waste upholstered domestic seating very often contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and other hazardous chemicals. Legal requirements apply to the disposal of these chemicals and the management of these waste items, meaning they must be incinerated and not be disposed of in landfill.
As a waste brokerage we have a duty to ensure this waste type of is disposed of correctly and responsibly, so we ask that if you have any of these items going into a skip that you have hired through us to please let us know before ordering so we can advise on the price as it will more than likely be different to the normal General Waste rate.
Thank you for your co-operation.
